Five New Giants of Opportunity, Clarion Housing Group

Clarion Housing Group’s new report, A New Social Contract for Housing, explores the “five new giants” shaping the future of housing: connection, resilience, sufficiency, trust and health. It offers a thought-provoking assessment of how housing systems must evolve to address health inequalities.

The report features contributions from colleagues at the UCL Institute of Health Equity, including analysis on the role of Marmot Places—local areas across the country working with IHE to apply the Marmot Principles by improving the social determinants of health through better housing, good work, and support for children.

The findings highlight that Marmot Places now cover around 43% of the UK population and demonstrate how embedding these principles into housing delivery can support the creation of healthier, more sustainable communities. The report also raises the potential for housing providers to become Marmot organisations, aligning their practice with principles that actively enhance residents’ wellbeing.

Housing is health, and this report makes a compelling case for why any future social contract must recognise and act on that connection.
